Hoia-Baciu Forest is located near Cluj-Napoca, Romania, part of the old-growth forests of the Apuseni Mountain foothills. It is approximately 1 square mile around. The area surrounding the forest is reported to be very beautiful with low green hills & lush valleys with charming villages dotting the countryside. It is also described as a rustic vista, in contrast to the forest looming from the hill above.

The forest was actually named after a shepherd that disappeared in the area with a flock of two hundred sheep. Natives to the area are afraid to enter it because of the stories and legends surrounding the forest. Many who have been brave enough to enter it have complained of physical harm, odd rashes, nausea, being lightheaded, vomiting, migraines, and other unusual sensations.

It is possible that some of the stories surrounding the location may be exaggerated, or even simply made up, however, most are hard-pressed to ignore the fact that there is indeed something bizarre going on in this forest.

The mysterious Hoia-Baciu Forest is actually beginning to become more well-known than the Dracula legend in Transylvania. It has become more famous due to the unexplained phenomena, which are considered by some as manifestations of the paranormal. This forest’s fame is spreading worldwide, and here is why:

  • Reputed to have an intense paranormal activity that seems mainly focused on an inexplicable clearing in the forest. This clearing is known as the “dead zone”. It is a supposedly a nearly perfect circle in the woods where nothing grows. Soil samples taken have been analyzed but show nothing in the soil that should prevent the growth of plant life.
  • The locals believe that circle is the actual hub for the paranormal activity. The circular plateau (which is deep in the forest) is considered to be the “home” of spirits haunting the forest. Oddly enough, photographs taken there have revealed “hovering” shapes and outlines of human forms, which further back up the claims.
  • Vegetation around this area is also unusual in appearance. Some trees appear as though they should be in a fantasy movie due to their strangely odd shapes (growing in bent and spiraled fashions or lean right over on top of themselves). Unexplained charring on tree stumps and branches appear around it as well. Were the shapes influenced by mysterious energies, as well as the charring?
  • Locals claim it is haunted by the peasants who were murdered within the forest. The belief is that the souls of these tormented ghosts are trapped within the forest.
  • Visitors report intense feelings of anxiety.
  • Being constantly watched while in, or near, the forest. Pairs of watching green eyes and a thick dark fog have been observed here.
  • Poltergeist activity includes people being burnt, bitten, scratched or pushed down by unseen hands.
  • Hearing disembodies female voices talking and giggling.
  • Unexplained events
  • Beliefs that it is a portal of sorts to another dimension. People will disappear, only to reappear with no idea of a time slip or where they have been. (One story focuses on a 5-year-old girl who wandered into the woods and got lost. According to the story, she emerged from the forest 5 years later, wearing the same clothes, clean and in the same condition, that she wore on the day she disappeared with no memory of where she had been or what had happened in that interval of time.)
  • It has gained the reputation as being the “Bermuda Triangle” of Romania.
  • There are also countless legends and stories about contact with entities outside our known world occurring here every year. Could it be some sort of stargate to another galaxy?
  • UFO sightings
  • People who live near it report seeing large collections of orbs of light coming from inside the tree line. (Interestingly enough, using thermal detectors for the orbs, do not produce any heat signatures.)
  • People who enter the forest will suddenly remember all of their past experiences however, they then forget those memories after leaving the land.

Electronic devices are known to inexplicably malfunction when brought into the area. Paranormal investigators associate these strange malfunctions with supernatural activity.

This forest has been researched by many different specialists from Germany, France, the United States, and even Hungary. All have spent time there, studying the mysteries. Photographs of odd manifestations have appeared on their film, including faces and apparitions. Oddly enough some of the images have been seen with the naked eye, while others only show up in photographs or in videos. (Human-shaped shadow figures are commonly reported within the forest as well as large masses of forming black mists.)

Back in the late 1960s, Alexandru Sift took several amazing photographs of a flying disc-shaped object in the sky above the forest. August 18, 1968, Emil Barnea captured a famous photograph of a saucer flying over the forest. Back in the 1970s, the area was a reported hotbed for UFO sightings and unexplained lights. Also noted that some of the photographs of captured UFO’s were taken by a military technician.

Others who have visited the area claim that they have only been awe-struck by the beauty of the forest. Nothing paranormal or otherwise has occurred. The “circle” is actually a meadow.

The forest is mysterious, however, it is reported to exhibit a beauty and intrigue in its own unique way.
